Minor works certificate template and example
A minor electrical installation works certificate (MEIWC) covers work to an existing circuit that does not include a new circuit, such as adding a socket or a light. Here is what the form contains.
It is shorter than an EIC but still a BS 7671 model form: it must be completed and signed by the competent person who did the work.
What a minor works certificate must contain
- Description of the minor works and the address
- Part 1: description of the work, any departures from BS 7671, and comments on the existing installation
- Part 2: installation details, including the system earthing arrangement and the protective measures
- Part 3: essential tests for the circuit worked on: continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance (Zs) and RCD operation
- Declaration with the name, signature and date of the competent person
The line that catches people out: a minor works certificate cannot be used where a new circuit was created. Add a circuit at the board and you need a full EIC. SparkCerts picks the right certificate for the job and checks the essential tests as you enter them.
Common questions
When can I use a minor works certificate?
Use one for additions or alterations to an existing circuit that do not include a new circuit, such as adding a socket, a light or a spur. If you add a new circuit at the consumer unit, you need a full EIC instead.
Does a minor works certificate need test results?
Yes. Part 3 records the essential tests for the circuit worked on: continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, Zs and, where fitted, RCD operating time.
