What drives the cost of a home EV charger
A 7 kW charger on the wall by the meter, with a spare way in the board, is a couple of hours' work and sits at the bottom of the range. What pushes the price up is the distance from the supply and the state of the existing installation, not the charger itself.
Cost drivers
- Cable run: a charger on the far side of the house means more cable, more containment and more labour.
- Consumer unit: a spare way costs nothing extra. A new RCBO, or a board with no room, adds to the bill.
- Earthing: many UK supplies are PME, so an open-PEN detection device may be required. It is built into most modern chargers.
- Route: surface clipping is quick. Chasing into walls or burying under a drive is not.
Grants and what a quote should include
Government support now focuses on people in flats and rented homes, plus landlord and workplace schemes. Check current GOV.UK guidance for eligibility. A proper quote includes the charger, all cabling and protection, the open-PEN solution, commissioning, and the certificate for the new circuit. If you are pricing the job, the maximum demand calculator shows whether the supply can take the extra load.
FAQs
How much does it cost to install a home EV charger in the UK?
Most 7 kW home installs are between about 800 and 1,500 pounds supplied and fitted, depending on the cable run, any consumer-unit work and whether an open-PEN detection device is needed.
Are there grants for EV chargers?
Government support is now focused on people in rented or flatted accommodation, plus workplace and landlord schemes. Eligibility and amounts change, so check current GOV.UK guidance.
Does an EV charger need its own circuit and certificate?
Yes. A home charge point is a new dedicated circuit, so it must be installed to BS 7671 and certified with an Electrical Installation Certificate, and notified under Part P where it applies.
